Here is a brief overview of the functions of each company, their apparatus (“rigs”) and the equipment that they use to keep the people of New York City safe.
Engine Company
The main goal of an Engine Company is to suppress fires. They are named after the engine apparatus, or rig, that is used to deliver Firefighters, hoses, appliances and tools to the scene of a fire or other emergency.

Hose Lines
One of our most effective lifesaving tools is a properly positioned and adequately supplied hose line. Once an Engine Company arrives on the scene of a fire, our Firefighters must position the rig and its hoses to utilize available sources of water and pump the water as needed.
Water Supply
Fdny Probie Manual
FDNY engines carry a supply of water, but only enough to get started fighting a fire. Additional water sources are needed and may include fire hydrants, or nearby bodies of water such as rivers and lakes.
Pump Operator
While there is a highly trained pump operator on every rig, all Engine Company personnel are trained to step in and assist if needed. Firefighters must understand pump operations, mechanics, controls and the pump panel, as well as the various water supply and discharge options.

Ladder Company Firefighters are deployed to fires and other emergencies that require the ability to access the upper floors or roof of a building. Ladder Company rigs have several functions and are equipped with either a truck-mounted aerial ladder or a tower ladder. Firefighters must be able to operate the different types of ladders and choose which is best for each emergency.
Aerial Ladders
Firefighters use aerial ladders to observe and assess fire conditions, ventilate smoke and heat from a fire area, gain entry to a building, search for (and rescue) fire victims, stretch hose lines to upper floors or the roof, and safely bridge gaps between buildings.
There are two types of aerial ladders – the rearmount and the tiller – both of which can reach a height of 100 feet. The tiller ladder is mounted on a tractor-trailer rig with maneuverable rear wheels.

When Firefighters from a Ladder Company arrive on the scene, they will raise their ladders if there is an immediate need or get the ladders into position in case they are needed as the situation progresses.
Tower Ladders
Tower ladders are the newest type of ladder used by Firefighters. Tower ladders have telescoping boom and an attached basket, which can be used to carry people to safety during rescue operations. The boom and basket is equipped with a large diameter pipe nozzle to support the delivery of large streams of water to fire areas.
